Vise Jaws with Character

When the time came to make the vise jaws, I knew that this element of the project would ultimately give the bench its character. It would make or break the final feel of the bench, so I proceeded slowly and carefully, following the hardware manufacturer's installation instructions precisely.

Initial fitting of front jaw
Initial fitting of front jaw.

The procedure for fitting both jaws was basically the same, so I'll describe only the steps for the twin-screw vise. Each vise jaw was made from a laminated 8/4 walnut blank. I started by drilling screw shaft holes in the blank and then mounted the twin-screw hardware in the usual fashion on the outer jaw face. I replaced the spring pins on the tees with hex bolts because I knew that I would be assembling and disassembling the hardware many times over the course of the installation.
