Ice Versus Wood
These days, Mr. Hayes whittles away more of his time carving
wood, which can pose fewer challenges than working with a substance
as finicky as ice. "I was an ice carver before I was a
wood carver… Ice is a little bit harder to carve than wood,"
he said. "Ice is transparent, so you have to work on the
front and back at the same time. You see through the sculpture
because ice is clear. You have to work with the back so it doesn't
interfere with the lines in the front."
He says he won't put away his ice-carving gear just yet because
he finds it satisfying to work with a medium that is unlike
any other. "The nice thing about ice is that your finished
piece is going to change its look for hours. It's always changing.
It never stops until it melts or gets knocked down."
