How to Make Maple Syrup and How to Grow Mushrooms
Thursday, March 7, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This is two-for-one class. The first hour is devoted to tapping Manitoba maple and birch trees for syrup. You will learn how to identify and select trees for tapping, how to tap the tree, how to boil off the sap, and how to bottle and store the syrup. The second hour focuses on growing your own shiitake mushrooms in your back yard using mushroom spawn and oak logs. At the end of the session, you will take home a set of four maple taps and a mushroom grow kit to get you started.
Fee: $90.00

Ken Fosty is a graduate of the Maritime Forest Ranger College in Fredericton, New Brunswick, as well as a Manitoba certified arborist. He is certified as a professional chainsaw operator by the Ontario Forest Safe Workplace Association (OFSWA). This certification is recognized in Ontario and the Prairie Provinces. On his managed woodlot in Southeast Manitoba, Ken taps Manitoba maple trees for syrup, grows Christmas trees, harvests firewood, plants trees and shrubs, and grows specialty mushrooms on logs.
