Removing the spile
Removing the sap spile from the mandrel.

In practice, a blank or cut piece of sheet goods was placed in the slot, bent down and as the armature was turned the lever on the other side forced the blank into a tapered receptacle. At that point, the junction was soldered to form the cone. There are two metal versions shown, one with a protrusion to hold the pail and one without.
