These exceptional chisels are hand forged by Teruo Miyanaga, a third-generation master blacksmith considered one of the finest in Japan.
The laminated blades, hardened to Rc65-66, combine a hard high-carbon Yasuki blue steel face with a shock-absorbing kamaji iron backing.
A challenge to forge and temper, blue steel has a high tungsten and chromium content to give a durable edge, especially in hard or abrasive woods.
Kamaji is reclaimed wrought iron (usually recovered from old anchors or anchor chain); it has unique working properties and a distinct grain structure that contrasts with the steel face for decorative effect, in this case a textured mokume ("wood grain") finish.
The chisels are a traditional pattern, with a triangular section that makes them ideal for removing waste between dovetails and allows them to work adjacent to angled surfaces. Their white oak handles have pre-seated, hand-forged hoops and are canted to provide clearance for flush-trimming projections or fitting recessed joints.
Available individually or as a set of all six sizes in a heavy-duty canvas roll. (Since these are hand made, they may vary in size by ±1mm.)
These products are not stocked at our retail stores but can be ordered for pick-up.
The Boxed Set of 6 Japanese Dovetail Chisels and the Wooden Box are no longer available.
