While the Lee family does have Irish roots, the "Valley" in our "Lee Valley" actually refers to the Ottawa Valley, where we are based.
When we discovered this product in 2004, it was the name of the manufacturer – Lee Valley Ireland – that immediately attracted our attention; that the line was a good "fit" for us was a bonus.
The rugged Grandfather shirt is patterned after those worn by farmers and workmen in the fields and mills of Ireland during the 19th and early 20th centuries. They chose the shirt for comfort and durability, and for the long shirt tail that would stay tucked in and keep their backs warm.
The traditional features include a button-through half placket and jetted pocket, as well as an extra-long shirt tail (about 34") and a collarless neckband. The buttons even have a tasteful "Lee Valley" etched on them.
Now manufactured in heavyweight yarn-dyed 100% cotton flannel, this is a loose-fitting casual shirt. (Allow for 5% shrinkage.)
The longer nightshirt (about 44" long) was developed following demand from customers whose Grandfather shirts were being appropriated for use as nightwear.
The nightcap, in the same flannel fabric, has an elasticized back edge. One size fits all. The nightshirt and cap pair makes an excellent gift.
