Harvesting Urban Timber | by Sam Sherrill
By some estimates, 20% of the trees in North America are in urban areas. Almost all of these trees end up as firewood, mulch or in the landfill. Sherrill proposes harvesting urban trees for lumber, and discusses felling, skidding, sawing and drying.
Through case studies, he demonstrates how individuals, interested groups, governments, schools and businesses have turned a costly trash disposal problem into a renewable community resource. The savings from landfill costs, and making rather than purchasing lumber, can pay for a small, portable sawmill. This is a valuable reference on an important subject.
