Mid-Century Modern Furniture

by Michael Crow

In the middle of the 20th century, designers started to rethink and simplify furniture to its basic forms. This book provides shop drawings and instructions for 29 popular and noteworthy designs of the period. Besides the technical details of the projects, the book provides background information about their designers (who include Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl and George Nakashima) and the movements that influenced them.

While only two of the plans have step-by-step instructions, the techniques shown can be applied to the other projects. Measured drawings, exploded diagrams and cutting lists for all the plans are clear and detailed enough for an experienced woodworker to build from. The designs were chosen to be within the reach of the average woodworker, requiring no exotic tools or metalworking, and result in elegantly simple furniture with a timeless appeal.
