Using scrap wood from one project as material for another, Jones guides the reader through a series of progressively more complex skill-building exercises that demonstrate a wide range of techniques. Box construction, marking and drilling to fit hardware accurately, joinery and other fundamentals are presented within the framework of 20 projects. Each includes step-by-step instructions, photographs and dimensioned drawings.

The book also has instructions for making a box-alignment jig, a bench hook and a shooting board. Starting at the beginner level and increasing in difficulty, the projects include a bird house, picture frames, a pen case made with sliding dovetails, and a tool caddy.
