The Stick Chair Journal, No.1

by Christopher Schwarz

Offert en anglais seulement

Designed as an annual supplement to The Stick Chair Book (2021) by Lost Art Press co-founder Christopher Schwarz, The Stick Chair Journal highlights chairmaking designs, techniques and tools as well as the cultural history of stick chairs, and features an entire chair plan in each issue.

The first issue contains articles on various aspects of stick chairs; Schwarz describes how to make hexagonal chair components, weighs the merits of sandpaper and edge tools for finishing surfaces, tries out a scriber made by Tooley Park Furniture, and looks at ways to build chairs more easily and economically. He introduces new design elements developed for the six-stick comb-back chair described in The Stick Chair Book. Supplemented with photos and author commentary, the article includes complete plans and construction drawings for the comb-back with an improved arm.

Another article examines the chair depicted as a sketch in editions of John Brown’s classic, Welsh Stick Chairs. This chair, which has inspired so many chairmakers, is currently displayed in a museum in Wales.

Included in this issue is an account of the legendary Vampire Chair of East Tennessee, by Randy Russell and Janet Barnett, a chilling tale that also offers a glimpse into the chairmaking trade of the region in the early 19th century.
