Carve a West Coast Paddle
       Thursday, April 4, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
and Friday, April 5, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This session involves carving one side of a West Coast paddle that will be suitable for hanging on a wall. These types of paddles were used on old whaling canoes. All of the paddles for a particular canoe would be exactly the same, except for the larger tiller paddle of the sternsman. Many of the old designs were so stylized that their meanings have been lost to time. You will be given the choice of patterns to carve, including orca and raven motifs. Spokeshaves will be used to fashion the outer curves and crooked knives will be used to dish out the parts. Painting will be done in class and a hanger will be added when the piece has been completed. All tools and materials provided.
Fee: $200.00

Rick Wolcott began carving at the age of 6 with his grandfather, a noted West Coast carver. In 1980 Rick began teaching decorative bird and decoy carving with the Calgary Board of Education. Over the past 30 years, Rick has taught courses all across Canada and the USA, focusing on West Coast Native art for the past 20 or so years. Rick enjoys putting stories in wood. He still judges at the occasional carving show and does commissioned works.
