Everyone knows that the secret of precision hand joinery is practice, and that's particularly true of dovetails, as you have to train yourself to make four different "crooked cuts": tilt-left, tilt-right, cant-left, and cant-right. That's four times as much muscle memory to develop as a regular lap joint! No wonder so few people get it right on the first try.
That's where the Veritas® Pocket Dovetailer comes in. With one tool, you can make airtight dovetails while at work, on the road, or even on vacation. This carefully crafted 6-in-1 multi-tool lets you do it all, wherever you want, whenever you want. Practice makes perfect, and this is the perfect tool to practice with.
Each part of this versatile tool is carefully crafted from premium materials. We start with the best Virgin aircraft aluminum – not to be confused with unused aluminum – we actually take it from Virgin Atlantic® aircraft, using material made available by weight-saving aircraft modifications*. Milled from a solid billet, the robust 1.38" diameter handle houses four blades: a striking knife, a 1/2" chisel, a 1/4" chisel, and a precision saw.
The double-edged striking knife is ground from O1 tool steel, and lapped to a thickness of 0.090", with a 55° point angle and 25° bevel angles. The 1/2" paring chisel is a sturdy 0.10" thick, and the 1/4" chisel is a stout 0.175" thick. Both are accurately ground and lapped A2 steel, with 25° bevel angles. The Japanese saw blade cuts a 0.025" kerf (it has a 0.020" saw plate), and has 14 teeth per inch with teeth raked at 14°. These are a special "Mijikai Yakunitatanai" pattern developed specifically for this tool.
The sprung blade lock with brass button fixes the blades firmly in the open or closed position, and provides critical tactile feedback as to handle orientation. For convenient layout, a pair of 1:6 and 1:8 dovetail markers are French fitted into handle recesses, and are secured using rare-earth magnets. This tool has it all.
Overall length is 8" open, 5.4" closed. Made in Canada. |

| * At 9.8 ounces per handle, and an average aircraft service life of 30,000 cycles, each Pocket Dovetailer saves Virgin more than 18,300 lb-takeoffs (equivalent to 8.35 metric tonne-landings). That's some carbon offset! |
