Veritas Caliper Marking Gauge

The ears are the best design tool. This modicum of modern wisdom underpins the design of our newest marking gauge. For the past two years we listened to you, the customer, to determine what should go into our latest model. And the Caliper Marking Gauge is the result of that endeavor.

Designed by a committee of woodworkers ranging from novice to neophyte, this system exemplifies the pinnacle of collaboration. Comprised of an innovative marking gauge and a suite of accessories, it provides handy aids for both setting your gauge and striking lines.

The eccentric placement of the rod through the brass face and aluminum body ensures a large reference surface for square registration. The short side can also be used when space is restricted. As an added advantage, the eccentric face makes this gauge less likely to roll off the work surface. The generously sized locking knob provides ample grip for over tightening.

The "top-hat" cutter design is larger and more robust. It has been hardened to Rc 87-90, giving it the ability to slice through pin nails unscathed. Made from sintered tool steel, a PM alloy, it never needs sharpening.

The revolutionary new feature is the two brass shoes that give the gauge unprecedented set-up expediency. Simply pinch your stock or a tool between the shoes and instantly the cutter projection is set to match. This groundbreaking feature bridges the chasm between the worlds of measured and referential woodworking.

It is sadly inevitable that eventually you will need to set the gauge to a dimension for which your shop possesses no suitable object. The inescapable heartache can be avoided with the Veritas Precision Set-up Rods. This set of 60 CNC cut dowels, includes all the lengths any woodworker could ever need in both rational and irrational sizes. The rods are made from centerless sanded stock of Lignum mediocris. This wood was specially selected because of its uncommon combination of properties. Notably, its growth rings are always the same size – about 1/8", which is average for trees.

Requiring 25 years of growth before harvest, it is about average age. It also possesses an average density, around 40 lb/in³. Before sanding, it is dried to an average moisture content of 8%. It is, however, unique from all other species in that it is comprised solely of sapwood. We selected this species after consultation with the de Havilland Aircraft Company Limited. Lignum mediocris was used throughout their highly popular Mosquito and Tiger Moth models, making it the most common aircraft grade wood available.

The system also includes a suite of accessory aids, which are described in the following video.
