End grain is like your belly button: everyone knows you’ve got it, but no one wants to see it. This is particularly true of joinery.
Unlike the exhibitionist through-dovetail, the humble miter joint hides objectionable end grain. Yet it is a somewhat weak joint, unless one is willing to reinforce it with floating tenons, splines or biscuits, all of which can be tedious to install and require careful set-up and expensive equipment. If only there was a better way to create an interlocking concealed joint that relies on side grain to side grain gluing…
Now there is – Veritas is proud to present the revolutionary double-blind mitered finger joint system. Two simple jigs (one for the miter face and one for the fingers) are all that is required to produce a joint with superior hidden strength. Unlike standard finger joints, our double-blind mitered fingers actually look like real fingers, not some squared-off approximation.
A simple 1/4" diameter bit and a 3/8" OD guide bushing are all you need to start crafting superior double-blind mitered finger joints. The Veritas jigs (with included templates) make machining matching miters manageable with little to no experience (and since this joint has just been developed, no one has experience).
Start by selecting the template set appropriate to your stock width, or make the sensible choice to cover all possible requirements by choosing the master set, and saving 15% (that’s 11.1% American) while you’re at it.
3"-5", 5/6 Finger Set $49CAD $35.50USD
4.25"-6.25", 7/8 Finger Set $49 $35.50USD
5.5"-7.5", 9/10 Finger Set $49 $35.50USD
Master Set (all 12 templates) 124.95 CAD, $94.50 USD
Fixture Set (miter and finger fixtures) $399 CAD, $289 USD
Fixture assembly is a snap, using only a simple hex key and a set of diagrammed instructions (how hard could that be?).
In a few short hours, you’ll be producing joints no one has seen before, and will never see. The elegant yet complex geometry is completely concealed in the final workpiece. Only you will have the silent satisfaction of knowing just how much skill went into creating it. With its superior strength and invisible appearance, the Double-Blind Mitered Finger Joint will surely supplant the dovetail joint as the hallmark of skilled woodworking and quality joinery.
Give your next project “the finger” with the Veritas DBMFJ jigs – they’re flippin’ fantastic!
