End grain is like your belly button: everyone knows you’ve got it, but no one wants to see it. This is particularly true of joinery.

Unlike the exhibitionist through-dovetail, the humble miter joint hides objectionable end grain. Yet it is a somewhat weak joint, unless one is willing to reinforce it with floating tenons, splines or biscuits, all of which can be tedious to install and require careful set-up and expensive equipment. If only there was a better way to create an interlocking concealed joint that relies on side grain to side grain gluing…

Two simple jigs (one for the miter face and one for the fingers) are all that is required to produce a joint with superior hidden strength. Unlike standard finger joints, our double-blind mitered fingers actually look like real fingers, not some squared-off approximation.

A simple 1/4" diameter bit and a 3/8" OD guide bushing are all you need to start crafting superior double-blind mitered finger joints. The Veritas jigs (with included templates) make machining matching miters manageable with little to no experience (and since this joint has just been developed, no one has experience).
