Using Starbond as a Woodturning Finish
Thin or medium Starbond can be used as durable, high-gloss finish for small projects, and can quickly be applied right on the lathe.
How do I use Starbond thin glue as a turning finish?
The application steps are straightforward after the object is sanded to a fine grit. Be scrupulous about the quality of the surface, and ensure each grit removes scratches left by the previous one.
As a sealer coat, rub a small amount of thin glue with a cloth to cover the whole surface (Photo 1). Let dry.
Apply subsequent coats, and friction-polish the uncured glue with the lathe running at a moderately slow speed (Photos 2 and 3).
Continue applications until you achieve a high-gloss finish (Photo 4).
Photo 1 – Let the thin glue dry to the touch.
Photo 2 – Apply additional coats, rubbing it over the object to leave an even layer.
Photo 3 – Before the Starbond cures, turn on the lathe and burnish the glue with a lint-free cloth.
Photo 4 – After several applications, the project will have a durable, high-gloss finish.
