Originally called the "Star Patent Daisy Grubber" when it was made in England a century ago, this tool was used for removing long-rooted weeds from lawns and gardens. We bought one of the old cast ones, liked it, and had it reproduced as a steel forging for improved toughness.
The great advantage of this design is the wide spoon-shaped shoulder behind the "V"; this large bearing surface lets you actually lever weeds out rather than have the neck of the tool sink into the ground or cut into the turf as happens with other dandelion diggers.
The hardwood handle gives you lots of leverage. The short-handled digger is 24" overall with an 18" handle; the longhandled digger is 60" overall with a 54" handle. The longer handle lets you work while standing up.

Yes, position the prongs close to the taproot, angle the handle slightly and push down so the forks choke and sever the root a few inches below the surface. This method can be done standing with the long-handled version.
