Q: What is an olla?
An olla is an unglazed terra cotta reservoir, buried in the soil, that releases water slowly to plant roots as the surrounding soil dries out.
Olla is full when water level indicator is up.
Used for thousands of years, an olla (pronounced “oya”) is a simple slow-release reservoir that is ideal for plants that need a consistent water supply. Buried in a garden bed, raised planter or large pot, it releases water directly to the root system as the soil dries.
Measuring 9" high by 6" wide and made from unglazed terra cotta, this olla holds 3 litres of water and covers a 16" radius. A water level indicator tells you when it's time to refill.
As with any terra cotta pot, it is recommended to bring it indoors during winter to prevent cracking.

This 3 litre size covers about a 16" radius, so match the size and number of ollas to your bed – larger beds need either a bigger olla or several placed throughout.
Buried near your plants, an olla's unglazed terra cotta walls let water seep out gradually as the surrounding soil dries, delivering it right where roots can use it.
