Description

Dear Customer,

As you can see by the letterhead and have been informed in previous boastful snippets, we did indeed win the design award that we were hinting at last year in this space. Some of the output of the design capacity that won it for us is sprinkled about on the two catalogue pages facing you.

You may wonder why we, as modern manufacturers, so often have antique tools on our covers. Our patent attorney once commented that when he does a patent search preparatory to patenting one of our newly developed products, he often finds that the previous patents in the field are from the 1800's.

After the great surge in hand tools development in the late 1800's, most manufacturers turned to power tools or other product lines. But there is still a close relationship between hand tools being developed today and the tools of the 1800's. So when we look at the best way to put a tenon on a chair rung or to cut a wooden plug, we look at the traditional ways of doing it so that we can benefit from experience and also not re-invent the wheel.

And even more important than all of the above, it provides an excuse for continuing to collect interesting old tools like the ones on the cover.

Yours sincerely,Leonard G. LeePresident
