Q: Why should I drill a pilot hole before installing these flat-head brass screws?
Brass is softer than steel, so driving 5/8" #3 flat-head brass screws directly into wood risks stripping the slot or snapping the shank. We recommend drilling a countersunk pilot hole first so the screw seats flush without forcing it.
