Part model, part machine and part musical instrument*, this kit supplies everything you need to assemble a music machine that plays a tune when you turn its handle. As the drum revolves, protruding pegs trip a sequence of eight hammers that strike metal plates, producing a pattern of musical notes. You can arrange the pegs according to the guide to play any of seven tunes including “Happy Birthday” and “Jingle Bells,” and you can also create your own compositions using the included blank template.
Each kit contains pre-cut components that need only to be popped out and fastened together with the supplied elastic bands – no glue or tools required. It’s easy for kids to follow the pictorial instructions to complete the assembly in two to three hours with adult help, and they can decorate it using their own art materials.
Recommended for ages 8 and up, it provides plenty of opportunities for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skill building and creative play. Not suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts.
* Popularly known as a xylophone, this toy’s proper name is glockenspiel or metallophone because the plates are metal (not wood).
