While making paint at home was once more commonplace than it is today, the process remains straightforward and inexpensive. In this pocketbook, woodworker Nick Kroll explains how to make fresh milk paint using simple household materials, hydrated lime and powdered pigment.

Based on historical casein paint recipes refined through extensive testing, Kroll’s methods produce a finish that applies easily, dries quickly and cures to a durable, low-luster surface. Mixed fresh in small batches, the paint can be made in virtually any custom color and left as is or top-coated with wax or oil if desired.

He uses common kitchenware, such as a blender, saucepan and strainer, with fresh quark as the main ingredient. If quark is not readily available, he also includes instructions for making it from skim milk and vinegar.

Written in a clear, conversational style, the book covers the complete process, from gathering and mixing materials to application techniques. It also includes simple top-coat recipes, and even a one-page recipe for Austrian puff-pastry treats you can make using the leftover quark.

Hardcover, 4 1/4" × 6 3/4", 100 pages, 2025.
