Each insert comes with a square socket drive and two guide bushings, the nominal size and the 1/16" undersize (except for the 1/4" insert sleeve, as the lower 16th size to this, 3/16", is too weak for this process). The inserts are made of anodized aluminum and the bushings are steel. The same square drive is used for the two sizes of dowel.

They're available from 1/4" up through 7/8" in 1/16" increments, so you can match the insert to whatever dowel diameter the project calls for.
These dowel inserts for the Veritas Dowel Maker use anodized aluminum for the insert body and steel for the guide bushings, a combination built to hold up to repeated passes of stock.
Because the next size down, 3/16", would be too thin-walled to hold up in this process, so the 1/4" insert skips the undersize bushing that every larger size includes.
