This set of three files from Nicholson includes a 10" mill bastard file, a 10" flat smooth file and a 6" extra-slim taper file.
The 10" single-cut mill bastard file is one you will reach for often. It has coarse teeth and is a good choice for quick stock removal, such as when removing nicks or shaping blades on drawknives, hatchets and axes, and for draw-filing cabinet scrapers.
Intended for more aggressive stock removal, the 10" flat smooth file is cut with two intersecting diagonal rows of teeth. This allows faster material removal than with a single-cut file, but with a trade-off of leaving a rougher surface.
The 6” triangular extra-slim file has a width of just over 1/4" and is for grooving, corner work and saw filing (11 tpi to 12 tpi). Its tapered shape makes it easier to access tight internal angles.
