Q: What is a marking gauge used for?
A marking gauge scribes a line for accurate measurement transfer.
05P8510 - Veritas Miniature Marking Gauges

These are 1:3 scale working models of our wheel marking and dual marking gauges.
Each is 2 1/4" long, and they weigh just under 1/2 oz and 3/4 oz respectively. Their size and the control it allows makes it feel like you're scribing a line with your fingers instead of a tool.
Like their full-size counterparts, they cut (not tear) fibers for clear marks even on cross grain, and have an eccentric reference face for good registration. The cutting edge is at the end of the rod so you can transfer measurements accurately.
With the dual marking gauge, you can set two measurements at once, so you can quickly alternate between them when transferring or marking repetitive dimensions.
Made of stainless steel with brass reference faces, they come with a French-fitted embossed leatherette box that holds both gauges.

A marking gauge scribes a line for accurate measurement transfer.
Set the reference face against the workpiece, then draw the gauge along the edge so the cutting wheel at the end of the rod scores a clean line at the set measurement.
The dual gauge has two independently adjustable rods, so you can set two different measurements and quickly alternate between them when marking repetitive dimensions.
