Like all tools that Bridge City makes, this bevel-up plane is innovative in form as well as function, with a unique design that is both pleasing to the eye and versatile in the workshop.

Supplied with two interchangeable double-ended blades, it gives you four different bevel options with a single plane. One blade has a 35° bevel at one end for general applications and a 30° bevel at the other for low-angle work; the second blade has a 48° bevel for smooth cuts in difficult grain, as well as a 30° toothed edge for use on reversing grain, heavily figured woods and even on knots, with minimal tear-out. The toothed edge can also be used for leaving witness marks to show which areas still need to be worked, or for texturing a surface for veneer. Combined with the 12° bed, the various blade bevels yield effective cutting angles of 42°, 47° and 60°, giving you a range of choices to suit the situation at hand.

Made of A2 tool steel hardened to Rc60-62, the 2" wide blades are a stout 1/4" thick to help minimize chatter, and come lapped to a flatness specification of ±0.002". A magnetic guard covers either edge when not in use to shield it from accidental contact.

In place of a conventional lever cap, a toggle lock mechanism holds the blade securely, yet permits fast blade changes and adjustments. A combined feed and lateral adjustment mechanism lets you control cut depth as well as the blade’s lateral setting with the same knob. The adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out, or opened wide for heavier cuts.

To expand the plane’s capabilities, it comes with a pair of depth skates that mount to the plane’s side wings for accurately planing multiple workpieces to a consistent thickness. The height-adjustable skates act as depth stops, elevating the plane so stock up to 1 3/4" thick and up to 2 5/8" wide can pass underneath, while preventing the plane from cutting below the height you set.

The plane’s 12" sole is made from 416 stainless steel, annealed for wear-resistance, with an extra-long toe (about 3 1/2") for reliable registration on the work. CNC-milled from aluminum and anodized to help maintain the surface finish, the “skeletonized” body has large openings to reduce excess weight without compromising strength and rigidity. The black-anodized front knob is turned from solid aluminum and has a bead-blasted matte texture, while the large rear tote is investment-cast 304 stainless steel, polished to a mirror finish.

Supplied with a drawstring storage bag, the plane comes in a French-fitted presentation case.
