44P0201 - Chamfer Plane
Like Japanese saws, Japanese planes are pulled, not pushed. They can be pushed, but cutting control is better on the pull stroke.
This white oak plane is similar to a traditional Japanese plane; however, a metal chip breaker with a capscrew replaces the traditional wooden wedge. To increase the cut, simply tap the front of the plane with a mallet; to decrease the cut, tap the back of the plane. The high-carbon steel blade will hold a keen edge to achieve tissue-thin shavings, even in difficult woods.
The plane can be adjusted to cut 30°, 45° and 60° chamfers. The blade is 3mm thick by 31mm wide (1/8" × 1 1/4") overall and 1" (26mm) wide at the cutting edge. It may require a bit of practice in setting up the blade to achieve the final cut, but once there, performs remarkably well.
Tap the front of the plane body or the end of the blade to advance the cut, and rap the heel of the plane body to back it off; use light taps at first until you get a feel for how much each tap moves the blade.
In a heated shop where humidity runs low, the white oak body can contract and pinch the blade; if that happens, pare a bit of wood from the throat sides to free up movement again.
Loosen the capscrew and rap the heel of the plane body with a mallet until the blade comes free by hand, or clamp the blade edges in a vise fitted with soft pads and drive the body off instead.
Pull-stroke cutting, like that of a Japanese saw, gives better control than pushing the tool away from you. This Japanese wooden chamfer plane, like traditional Japanese planes, is designed to be pulled for that reason.
