Felt Wheels

(0 Reviews)
  • Two Grades for Different Applications: Hard felt wheels maintain a predetermined bevel angle for chisels and plane blades; medium felt wheels allow controlled bevel rounding suited to carving tools where a small radius adds edge strength.
  • Three Width Options: Available in 1/2", 3/4" and 1" widths to suit different tool widths and grinder set-ups – a narrow wheel for the inside of gouges, wider wheels for bench chisels and plane blades.
  • Razor-Sharp Edge with Honing Compound: When dressed with Veritas Honing Compound, the edge produced on a hard felt wheel is comparable to most razor blades.
  • Standard 5/8" Arbor Fitting: All wheels are bored for 5/8" arbors with a 1/2" bushing included; maximum 3600 rpm, compatible with most bench polishing motors and grinders.
  • 150mm Nominal Diameter: Actual wheel diameter is 150mm (5 7/8"), providing consistent honing clearance across standard bench-grinder set-ups.

The finest edge you can get on any tool is with a strop or a buffing wheel. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get that edge without rounding the bevel somewhat when using a wheel. In certain cases (such as with carving tools), a rounded bevel may be desirable, but with chisels and plane blades it is best to maintain a predetermined bevel angle. A hard felt wheel is best for that.

When the wheel is dressed with our blade honing compound, the edge obtained is comparable to most razor blades.

A medium felt wheel is still very firm, but is more suitable for carving tools where controlled bevel rounding is desirable to give edge strength.

A narrow, medium felt wheel is best for the inside of carving gouges.

All our felt wheels are bored for 5/8" diameter arbors, but a 1/2" bushing is provided. Maximum 3600 rpm.

Nominal Imperial sizes are given for easier reference. Actual diameters are 150mm (5 7/8") and widths of 13mm (33/64"), 20mm (25/32"), and 25mm (63/64").
