Start with a coarser grit like 80x to shape or remove material, then step up through the pack's finer grits, finishing around 320x or 400x for a smooth, finish-ready surface.
For general woodworking, 120x to 180x handles most surface prep, and this 30-pc. sample pack of Mirka Gold 3" × 4" grip sheets lets you test that range and beyond, with five stearate-coated sheets of each grit from 80x to 400x resisting loading as you sand.
A finer grit around 220x to 320x from this pack works well to smooth a surface before painting.
