Japanese Bookbinding

Learn traditional Japanese bookbinding techniques and create a beautiful hand-bound book for your photos, stories, poems, pressed flowers or memorabilia. Your classic Japanese-bound book will use decorative papers on the cover and acid-free paper for the pages. You will learn basic techniques (determining measurements, mitering corners, scoring and sizing paper), the four-hole Japanese binding method, and how to make traditional bookbinding paste that is archival and non-toxic. A demonstration of the construction of a bookbinding press will also be given. All tools and materials supplied.

Instructor Bio

Jo Ann Kronquist has been practising bookbinding and mat cutting since graduating in photography from the Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in Vancouver. After constructing books as a practical means to store her photographs, she explored traditional and alternative bookbinding methods. She wrote the book The Essentials of Matting and Framing and enjoys working as a picture framer and running her business, Framequist.

Registration Requirements

Seating is Limited. Please register early to avoid disappointment. Unless otherwise stated, previous experience is not required to participate in seminars and attendees should be 16 years old or older. Seminar tickets are not available online.

All tools and materials will be supplied.

Food & Drink

Beverages are provided at our seminars and a light sandwich lunch is provided at all-day events. Please discuss any special dietary needs with the staff at time of registration. In an effort to reduce waste, we encourage you to bring in your own coffee mug and/or refillable water bottle.

What to Wear

We require that you wear closed shoes (e.g. running shoes) to all seminars.
