Carve a West Coast Paddle

Cancelled

In this session, you will carve one side of a West Coast paddle that will be suitable for hanging on a wall. These types of paddles were used on old whaling canoes. All of the paddles for a particular canoe would be exactly the same, except for the larger tiller paddle of the sternsman. Many of the old designs were so stylized that their meanings have been lost to time. You will have a choice of patterns to carve, including orca and raven motifs. Spokeshaves will be used to fashion the outer curves and crooked knives to dish out the parts. You will then paint it and add a hanger. All tools and materials provided.

$150.00

Instructor Bio

Rick Wolcott started carving at the age of 6 with his grandfather, a noted West Coast carver. In 1980, Rick began teaching decorative bird and decoy carving with the Calgary Board of Education. Since then, Rick has taught courses all across Canada and the USA, focusing on West Coast Native art since the 1990s. Rick enjoys putting stories in wood.
