How to Make a Cedar-Strip or Stitch and Glue Canoe or Kayak


For anyone who has thought about building a canoe or kayak but doesn't know where to start, this session will present a general overview of the process. There will be a demonstration of construction systems and a discussion of tool requirements, wood selection, sources of materials and other topics from layout to launch. Bring your questions.

Instructor Bio

Frank Berinstein trained as an architectural technologist at the University of Buenos Aires and has been involved in construction using wood throughout his long career. His love of being on the water led to an interest in building and designing wooden watercraft. For the past 30 years, as a full-time profession, Frank has built many types of wooden boats and hand-crafted furniture, and in recent years has been experimenting with woodturning. He is also a popular instructor of woodworking techniques. Frank is an employee of Lee Valley.

Registration Requirements

Seating is Limited. Please register early to avoid disappointment. Unless otherwise stated, previous experience is not required to participate in seminars and attendees should be 16 years old or older. Seminar tickets are not available online.

Tools & Materials

All tools and materials will be supplied.

Food & Drink

Beverages are provided at our seminars and a light sandwich lunch is provided at all-day events. Please discuss any special dietary needs with the staff at time of registration. In an effort to reduce waste, we encourage you to bring in your own coffee mug and/or refillable water bottle.

What to Wear

We require that you wear closed shoes (e.g. running shoes) to all seminars.
