The LED lighting we offer operates on 12 volts DC. While that makes it directly compatible with the power systems found on most RVs and boats, all other installations require a power supply to convert standard 120 volt AC electrical power to 12 volts DC. These power supplies require the dimming function to occur on the output (12V DC) side, which is easily done using the LED dimmers we offer. If you would rather use the style of dimmer switch often used to control conventional house lighting (an electronic low-voltage (ELV) or universal CFL/LED bulb (C·L) dimmer), you will need a power supply that accepts the dimming function on the input (120V AC) side. Click here for more information. Note that none of the power supplies require that a dimmer switch be used, it is always an option.

All power supplies shown here come prewired with a 60" (1.5m) AC cord with plug end for use in a standard 120 volt outlet and the output (DC) side equipped with color-coded lead wires or DC plug. Select a power supply based on the total wattage required for your lighting arrangement (at full brightness), choosing one with an output equal to or greater than your calculated need (see chart).

LED Tape Lighting

For tape lighting, the power requirement is determined by the wiring configuration, the LED density (# LEDs/m) of your chosen lighting and the length of the lighting. The lengths shown in the chart are totals for the tape lighting (at full brightness) in various wiring configurations. A straight-run layout uses single or multiple strips in series powered only at one end of the LED strip. A center-feed layout powers two equal legs of tape lighting from a central position; a loop-back layout has both ends of the LED tape powered simultaneously. Array layouts have several unequal lengths of tape powered from one end. Do not include the length of connecting wires when referencing the chart. For long lighting runs, an array-based wiring configuration, makes the best use of the capacity of the larger power supplies. For installations combining tape lighting and mini recessed lights, the power supply should be chosen based on the sum of the two power requirements.

LED 1-Watt Mini Recessed Light and 3-Watt Downlight

For the mini light and downlight, the appropriate power supply wattage is determined by the number of lights being used (and their full-power brightness wattage). For example, a 15-watt power supply will effectively run up to 15 of the 1-watt mini lights or four of the 3-watt downlights (four lights at 3.24 watts each = 12.96 watts) at maximum brightness. Exceeding these power supply wattages will cause the lights to flicker or appear dim. The number shown in the chart indicates the maximum number of lights that can be installed per power supply.

The 6W to 60W power supplies shown here are rated for indoor installation only, but can be used to power outdoor lighting; simply install the power supply indoors and run outdoor-rated wiring from it to the lights. The 90W power supply, with an IP67- rated enclosure, is certified for use in damp environments. If your installation requires the 90W power supply to be outdoors, we recommend that you consult your local electrical building code for guidance on connecting it to household electrical power. It is advisable to install any outdoor power supply and electrical connection in a location where they are shielded from exposure to the elements.
