Another Work is Possible

by Joshua A. Klein

Charpentiers Sans Frontières (Carpenters Without Borders) is an international group that builds and restores wooden structures using simple tools and historical methods. This book documents the nine days they spent building a blacksmith shop in cooperation with Mortise & Tenon Magazine. From finding and felling the trees to raising and completing the structure, they used only hand tools: axe, saw, chisel and plumb bob.

Much more than a how-to, the book tells a story of skilled craftspeople working together, using their own words and stunning images to build an argument that it is possible to work sustainably and without power tools in the modern world.

Smythe-sewn hardcover, 9 1/2" × 11 1/2", 240 pages, 2020.
