This is the last of a four-volume compilation of articles by renowned woodworker Charles H. Hayward, reprinted with his original drawings, diagrams and photographs. As editor of the influential British magazine The Woodworker from 1939 to 1967, Hayward had a lasting impact on the craft, contributing a huge amount of writing on virtually every aspect of working with wood. Remarkable for the breadth and detail of their coverage, the books serve as comprehensive guides to the practice of woodworking by one of its leading figures in the 20th century.

olume IV begins with a selection of articles on the design and construction of workbenches as well as chests and cabinets for storing tools. The second section includes articles examining major Western furniture styles in depth, along with Hayward’s meticulously detailed construction drawings taken from historical examples. The final selection of articles takes on an array of topics that don’t fit neatly into any of the subject categories covered by the previous sections or books, probing everything from the practical implications of working with figured grain to reflections on the artistic and philosophical aspects of building things by hand.

Softcover, 8 1/2" × 11", 322 pages, 2016.
