This biannual publication celebrates the history, practice and preservation of traditional woodworking. Its multidisciplinary approach brings together the perspectives of woodworkers, conservators and scholars to span craft past and present, with a particular focus on pre-industrial tools and methods. Issue 20 explores how traditional handwork can connect us with the knowledge of earlier makers while offering a distinctly human response to modern technology.
Articles include M&T editor Joshua A. Klein’s tribute to William S. Coperthwaite and the enduring influence of his book A Handmade Life. Adapting several of Coperthwaite’s designs, Klein shows how making beautiful, useful things can add meaning to everyday life. In an interview, author Paul Kingsnorth warns against over-reliance on automated technologies in daily life and the workshop in order to preserve our capacity to shape our own lives.
Furniture conservator Randy S. Wilkinson and Yale conservation scientist Richard R. Hark describe using microscopy, chemical analysis and laser spectroscopy to distinguish true mahogany from look-alikes in historic furniture without damaging the pieces, and planemaker Steve Voigt traces the legacy of Larry Williams and Don McConnell, whose exhaustive study of 18th-century planes helped revive interest in traditional wooden bench and moulding planes.
