Stains
The two wood stains we offer behave significantly differently. General Finishes water-based pigment stain is a penetrating stain that soaks into the wood fibers, providing even color while allowing the grain to remain visible. Its water-based formula dries quickly, cleans up with soap and water, and can be applied by brush, roller, spray or pad. It can also be mixed with General Finishes water-based topcoats to create a toner. On blotch-prone woods such as pine, a pre-stain conditioner can help promote more uniform absorption and may also be used to dilute the stain. It is compatible with all General Finishes topcoats. General Finishes gel stain is a heavy-bodied oil-based stain that remains close to the surface rather than penetrating. Applied with a brush, roller or cloth, it offers excellent control on vertical surfaces, moldings and woods prone to uneven absorption. Its high pigment concentration produces rich, semi-opaque color, and the urethane binder allows it to be used as a glaze or semi-gloss topcoat. It is compatible with all General Finishes varnishes but must cure for at least 72 hours before a water-based finish is applied. Choose a penetrating stain when you want a traditional look that highlights the grain and can be top-coated quickly. Choose a gel stain when color control, blotch resistance or use as a glaze is the priority. Both are intended for interior projects only.
