Q: How do the hooks on this push block work?
The hooks at both ends of the GRR-Rip Block retract automatically when you press the block onto the center of a board, and you can lock them retracted if you don't need them for a given cut.
GRR-Rip Block shown with optional deflector/connector

With retractable hooks at both ends and a high-friction pad on the bottom, this push block provides excellent grip no matter where you place it on the stock. The hinged hooks automatically retract when pressed onto the middle of a board; they can also be locked in the retracted position.
To hold stock vertically against a fence, such as when resawing with a bandsaw, you can flip the block onto its 1 3/8" shoulder. The handle is angled for comfort.
As an optional accessory, a clear polycarbonate deflector is available separately.

Yes, flipping it onto its 1 3/8" shoulder holds stock vertically against the fence, which is exactly the orientation resawing calls for.
An optional clear polycarbonate deflector is available separately if you want extra visibility and protection while pushing stock through the blade.
No, a high-friction pad on the bottom keeps it planted against the stock, so it pushes the work forward instead of sliding across it.
The handle is angled to keep your hand in a natural, comfortable position as you push stock through a cut, rather than forcing your wrist into an awkward angle.
