Description

A classic project, wooden spoons are simple to make and can be personalized with creative touches, making a unique, useful gift. This kit gives you everything you need to get started: a guide book, two essential knives and a limewood blank.

The book, 12 Spoons, 2 Bowls, and a Knife, offers detailed step-by-step instructions for carving the projects described in the title. Including both utilitarian and decorative designs, the book teaches basic carving cuts and safety as well as expert tips. Patterns for each of the 15 projects are included.

The sloyd knife (from the Swedish word for craft, slöjd) is a classic design useful for roughing out shapes and carving details. The finely sharpened high-carbon steel blade has a convex grind, allowing you to make smooth slicing cuts.

The hook knife is used for hollowing concave forms. Designed for making paring cuts, the pronounced curve (approximately 1/2" radius) of the blade allows rapid material removal. The kit comes with the option of a right- or left-handed hook knife to suit your dominant hand.

Both knives have comfortable beech handles, and are made by Narex, a Czech company known for its high-quality woodworking tools.

For your first spoon, we’ve included a limewood blank. Also known as linden, this wood is a close relative to basswood and is valued by carvers for its ability to take details while being easy to carve. It’s also safe for food contact. The blank is pre-cut to a rough spoon shape, measuring 9 7/8" long and 2 1/4" wide overall.

An excellent all-in-one introduction to carving spoons.
