The Tormek water-cooled sharpening system has a well-deserved reputation for versatility, accuracy and ease of use. Its precise jig-guided control allows even the novice to consistently produce tools with proper edge geometry. The double-ended arbor carries two wheels – a 220x aluminum oxide grindstone and a leather stropping wheel charged with compound. Grinding on the stone followed by stropping creates a toothed edge suitable for shears, cutlery, axes or utility chisels. When you need a refined edge, you can use the included stone grader to convert the grindstone’s surface to a fine texture comparable to 1000x; subsequent stropping produces a mirror finish. Made in Sweden from sturdy, high-quality components.
The basic T-4 machine is suitable for general home and workshop sharpening. It has an impact-resistant ABS plastic housing with a cast zinc top plate to provide firm support for the jigs. The machine includes a 200mm dia. by 40mm wide (8 × 1 5/8”) grindstone, a 145mm dia. by 26mm wide (5 3/4” × 1”) leather wheel, and a removable trough that holds the water and collects swarf. Its 115V motor runs at 120 rpm, is rated for 1/2 hour of use every hour and has a rust-resistant stainless-steel arbor.
The professional-grade T-8 machine sharpens a wide range of household and woodworking tools. Rated for continuous use, it’s more powerful and robust than the T-4, with sufficient torque to maintain constant speed under full load; this is important when grinding jointer/planer blades and high-speed steel tools, which require the user to apply greater force. Its 115V motor operates at 90 rpm and has a stainless-steel arbor to resist rust. The T-8 has ABS side panels and a substantial cast-zinc housing, which dampens vibration and gives the jigs rigid support. A magnet built into the removable water trough gathers metal debris for ready disposal. Includes a 250mm dia. by 50mm wide (10” × 2") grindstone as well as a 220mm dia. by 31mm wide (8 5/8” × 1 1/4”) leather wheel. It also comes with the diamond-tipped wheel-truing tool and the square-edge jig.
Both machines include a gauge for measuring and setting bevel angles, a stone grader and a 70g tube of 3-micron honing compound. The machines come with a 7-year warranty (the T-8 is also covered for commercial use). A 58-minute DVD and 164-page manual provide complete instructions for sharpening an array of tools, as well as maintenance advice and other tips. For those who would like a preview, the DVD is also sold separately.
