Developed for knock-down construction, these bolts and cross-dowels are useful anywhere you need a strong butt joint, or where the material is not strong enough to support a threaded insert.
The brass cross-dowel has a threaded hole through the middle to accept the accompanying zinc-plated steel bolt. The combination of brass and steel prevents lockup, permitting easy disassembly. No complex joinery is required for rigid construction, and the bolt can be snugged if anything loosens due to humidity changes. The cross-dowel has a slot at one end so you can use a screwdriver to align it with the bolt. A threaded hole on the other end of the cross-dowel allows mounting of a dowel cap.
The largest size of bolt can be used as a bench bolt; most European benches use a bolt system to fasten leg sets to stretchers. The cross-dowel slides into a 1" pre-drilled hole in the stretcher, and distributes pressure to prevent breakout. A bench can be made very rigid (without complex joinery) by using a wide stretcher, since the stretcher is bolted into position.
Each fastener includes a cross-dowel, washer and bolt. The largest size is available only as a package of four.
The 1/4-20 size has a 3" bolt with a 1/2" × 1/2" cross-dowel and is recommended for use with 3/4" nominal stock. The 5/16-18 size has a 4" bolt with a 5/8" × 5/8" cross-dowel and is for 1" nominal stock. The 3/8-16 size has a 5" bolt with a 3/4" × 3/4" cross-dowel and is for use with 1 1/4" nominal stock. The largest 1/2-13 6" bolt has a 1" × 1" cross-dowel and is for use with 1 1/2" nominal stock.
Dowel caps used to conceal the hole made for the cross-dowel are available separately.
