Description
These are well-designed and ruggedly constructed lanterns.
The battery-powered version provides broad coverage at its full intensity of 400 lumens; the medium setting of 170 lumens is sufficient to read by, and on low, the 30 lumen output provides a soft glow (a bit brighter than a typical nightlight). It stays lit for nearly 800 hours in low mode before needing fresh batteries, equivalent to over 4 1/2 weeks of continuous use. Measuring about 8" tall by 3 3/4" in diameter, it weighs almost 2 lb (with batteries) – a bit cumbersome to carry on a hike, but well suited for the campsite or at home during a blackout. Operates on three D-cell batteries (not included).
The rechargeable model is more than just a light source. It has two USB ports – a micro input for replenishing the 2600mAh lithium-ion battery (cord included) and a standard output for charging small electronics. Emitting 300 lumens on its high setting, 75 on medium and 15 on low, it also has a red LED mode to help preserve night vision. Compact and light enough to be easily carried in a backpack, it is 7" tall by 2 3/4" in diameter and weighs 9 oz.
Both lanterns have upper and lower cone-shaped reflectors to provide 360° of uniform illumination, and three brightness-control settings. Impact and weather resistant, each has a strong ABS plastic housing with a rubberized coating, a shatterproof polycarbonate lens, a handle with a sprung stainless-steel gate for hanging, and a carrying bag made of translucent fabric that also serves as a light diffuser.
