Description

A quarterly publication celebrating the art and craft of woodworking by hand, Quercus features the voices of craftspeople and makers from around the world. Named for the genus to which oak belongs, the magazine highlights workmanship and design, woodworking techniques, tools and traditions spanning the centuries.

In this issue, David Johnson guides you through the steps of caning a mid-century Danish chair, and Masashi Kutsuwa offers insights into Japanese techniques for riving green birch logs for chairmaking.

Robin Gates, Dylan Iwakuni and Gerwyn Lewis discuss tool storage, and Derek Jones takes a close look at the form and function of shooting boards. Nick Gibbs examines the use of laminations made with PU adhesive as an alternative to steam bending, Rex Krueger reproduces an unusual antique marking gauge, and Steve Schuler explains how to make a wooden tobacco pipe.

To kick off his Q&A column on sharpening, Nova Scotia woodworker Richard Wile offers advice on maintaining and storing sharpening stones. This issue also includes an interview with Terry Gordon, the founder of Australian planemakers HNT Gordon and Co., a profile of British greenwood expert Mike Abbot, and more.
