These awls have accurately turned conical tips, strong bolsters and comfortable handles. The tip is A2 steel hardened to Rc60-62 for toughness, and can be replaced if damaged.
The bolster, made from stainless steel, transitions smoothly into the taper of the handle to provide a larger hand contact area. The hard maple handles have been torrefied, a heating process that changes the structure of the wood at the cellular level, to stabilize the handles against swelling and shrinkage caused by humidity changes.
The small 4 3/8" awl can be cupped in your palm with your fingers close to the tip, allowing more control for delicate work. The large 5 3/4" awl fits comfortably in your hand. Sure to become the first awls you reach for when laying out projects.

Yes, the tip is designed to be replaceable, so you can fit a new one rather than replacing the whole awl.
Torrefaction heat-treats the hard maple handle, making it more stable and resistant to warping from humidity than untreated wood.
Choose the 4 3/8" small awl for precise palm control on fine layout work, or the 5 3/4" large awl when you want a full-hand grip for heavier marking tasks.
Yes, the conical tip and this Japanese awl's design are shaped for the piercing, rotating marking technique common in Japanese-style layout work, rather than the scratching action of a scratch awl.
