Description

If you want to make the jump into hand-cut joinery, this is the essential set of planes. It includes four of our most popular joinery planes – our large router plane, small plow plane, skew rabbet plane and medium shoulder plane. With these four planes, you can cut almost any kind of joint.

The router plane has many uses, from creating stopped grooves to cutting recesses to a precise depth (hinge gains, for example). It comes with the full complement of high-carbon steel Imperial blades: seven blades from 1/16" to 1/2" wide, including a 1/2" wide spear-point blade for cleaning up the bottom of recesses. The included fence is reversible for straight or curved edges.

The small plow plane is a great asset for tongue-and-groove joints for drawers, cabinet backs and frame-and-panel construction. It cuts grooves and small rabbets quickly and precisely, and makes matching tongues with ease. It can also be used for beading work. The set includes seventeen blades: eleven straight blades from 1/8" to 3/4" wide, three tongue-cutting blades (1/8", 3/16" and 1/4") and three beading blades (1/8", 3/16", 1/4"). A wide-blade conversion kit that adds a second skate to support the wider blades and tongue-cutting blades is also included. All blades are A2 tool steel, with the exception of the PM-V11 beading blades. The 6 5/8" long fence allows an offset of up to 1 1/2" from the edge of the workpiece, and an adjustable shoe controls the rabbet depth to a maximum 1/2" deep. A right-handed or left-handed plane is provided, depending on which set you choose.

The skew rabbet plane cuts rabbets up to 1 1/2" wide with or across the grain for casework and frame-and-panel construction. Its PM-V11 blade is skewed 30°, reducing cut resistance and improving surface finish when cutting across the grain. It has a scoring spur ahead of the blade that reduces tear-out on cross-grain cuts. Corner cuts are clean and accurate.

The 7 3/8" long fence allows an offset of up to 1 1/2" from the edge of the workpiece, and an adjustable shoe controls the rabbet depth to a maximum 3/4" deep. A right-handed or left-handed plane is provided depending on which set you choose.

The medium shoulder plane is the ultimate tool for tuning joints to a perfect fit. It can be used on end grain to trim tenon shoulders and cross-grain to pare tenon cheeks. It can also be used with the grain for rebate and dado work; its 11/16" width fits snugly in a 3/4" channel. It has an adjustable toe that allows you to control the mouth opening. The sides are ground flat and square to the sole. A PM-V11 steel blade is included.

All have ductile cast-iron bodies with soles that are machined or ground flat. Blade projection and adjustment are easy to set with large brass thumbscrews. Their hardwood handles and knobs are designed for comfort and control.
