Q: Why would I need longer fence rods?
The longer rods let you fit a thicker auxiliary fence for stable registration against a workpiece while still using the full cutting width of the blade.

A pair of 6" stainless-steel fence rods for the Veritas skew rabbet plane. (These are 2 1/2" longer than the rods supplied with the plane). They are desirable when you need to add a thicker auxiliary fence for stable registration against a workpiece, such as with a tapered spacer for angled cuts, but still require use of the full cutting width of the blade. Flats on the ends of the rods permit wrench tightening.
