Crown M42 Spindle Gouges

Quantity:

Widely used in metal machining, M42 high-speed steel is also an excellent material for wood-turning tools. The “M” refers to molybdenum, which provides strength and toughness, but what really sets this alloy apart is the addition of 10% cobalt, allowing it to be hardened to a much greater degree than other HSS alloys. Additionally, these tools are cryogenically treated to further toughen them to prevent brittleness. The resulting tools take an excellent edge and are highly durable, making for clean cuts and less-frequent sharpening.

Spindle gouges are for shaping and finishing cuts when turning between centers. They have a fingernail grind that permits a range of cuts on concave and convex shapes. The two smaller gouges are milled from rod stock; the largest is forged from solid bar. They have 6 3/4" blades and 10" black-lacquered ash handles fitted with a copper ferrule. Hardened to Rc66-69.

Made by Crown in Sheffield, England, they are finely finished and come with a lifetime guarantee.
