05N1301 - Veritas Skew-Grinding Jig
Skews are among the trickiest tools to use in turning without causing digs.
To prevent digs, this jig allows you to grind a slight radius rather than a straight 20° skew. It can be used on just about any grinder; all you need to do is drill a 1/4" hole in the tool rest (if required) to hold the base pin.
The radius of the grind is determined by the amount the skew projects from the jig. After grinding one side, you flip the skew to the other side of the jig and repeat.
The skew is clamped in position, which leaves both hands free to regulate grinding pressure and travel across the wheel.
The pin is steel; otherwise, the jig is brass and anodized aluminum.

A straight 20° skew has corners that can catch the work and cause dig-ins during turning. Grinding a slight radius removes the sharp corners and creates a gentler transition across the cutting edge, reducing the risk of the tool snagging when it contacts the workpiece at varying angles.
The radius is determined by how far the skew projects from the jig. A longer projection creates a tighter radius; a shorter projection creates a more gradual one. Adjust the projection to suit the degree of camber you prefer on the cutting edge.
If your grinder's tool rest does not already have a 1/4" hole for the base pin, you will need to drill one. Beyond that, no special grinder is required – the jig is designed to fit most standard bench grinders.
Grind the first face with the skew clamped in position, then flip the skew to the opposite side of the jig and repeat the process. This symmetric approach ensures both faces are ground to a consistent radius.
