Description

We originally purchased a quantity of these diamond abrasive sheets as replacement surfaces for the Atoma diamond plates. But, seeing as diamond abrasives are so durable, we haven’t sold even one replacement sheet in the last several years! Nonetheless, these sheets are ideal for making your own lapping plates.

What drew us to the Atoma diamond plates was the way the monocrystalline diamond particles are arranged in clusters rather than being distributed evenly. Not only does this provide outstanding fracture resistance, it also yields a surface that cuts quickly, wears slowly and produces a consistent scratch pattern. Swarf collects in the channels around the clusters, minimizing loading and hydraulic lock.

The diamonds are electroplated onto one side of a 75mm wide by 210mm long (approximately 3" × 8 1/4") steel sheet. The back side has a high-tack, long-lasting double-sided tape that will adhere to almost any flat substrate (e.g., ceramic tile, glass, steel, aluminum, wood). As with the Atoma diamond plates, your homemade lapping plate can be used with water or a light oil (water for water stones, oil for oil stones!).

The 140x is for rapid material removal; the 400x is suitable for fast lapping, truing water stones or shaping a primary bevel; the 1200x can be used for fine lapping or general sharpening, and leaves a slightly barbed edge on kitchen knives.

Of course, you can still buy these diamond abrasive sheets to replace the surface of your Atoma diamond plate.
