Chip Carving

Chip carving involves removing chips from a flat wooden surface in geometric patterns to create a larger image or design. Designs can be an individual piece or be used to embellish an item such as a box or picture frame. Various knives and gouges can be used to make the different cuts, though most cuts can be made using a single carving knife with a short blade and little to no bevel. Books on chip carving explain the basic skills required, such as different types of cuts and patterns, and offer projects for beginners through to more advanced patterns and techniques for experienced chip carvers.
