A T-nut is a threaded insert that gets driven into a predrilled hole in wood, where barbed prongs anchor it in place to provide a permanent, reusable metal thread for a bolt. These four-prong T-nuts (5/16-18 thread) use a 7/8" flange and a 3/8" barrel to seat into the wood.
Drill a 3/8" pilot hole into the wood, then drive the T-nut in so its flange sits flush and the prongs seat into the surrounding wood. Tightening a bolt into the T-nut draws the prongs in further and locks it against turning.
